Description The book describes the role of some European forts in the First World War. It starts out on describing the forts and defences of Belgium, France and Russia at the beginning of World War One. It focusses on the forts of Liege, Namur, Antwerp, Maubeuge, Novogeorgievsk and Kovno in the second chapter. In the third chapter the author tries to explain why the forts have surrendered so quickly. In the fourth chapter the author tells about the role of some of the forts around Verdun in battle - Douaumont, Vaux, Tavannes, Souville and Thiaumont. All in all, this is an extremely interesting book - the forts were built for war, but how strong were they actually? Why were they unable to resist the artillery that was used against them? This is "fortification" at its finest - feed for "specialists", written by another specialist. Alexis V. de Schwarz was a General in the Russian army. He also wrote a book on the defence of Port Arthur in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/1905 - another fantastic book on fortification. The book is EXTREMELY RARE and in GOOD shape, although the spine was reinforced with black tape and some of the folding plans have staining caused by moisture. The book contains 16 large folding maps and plans of some of the forts mentioned in the book. A true "collector's item"!! Written in Spanish and illustrated with dozens of photos and maps, as well as 16 large, folding maps and plans.
