6/3/42 Eleventh AF
Japanese carrierbased bmrs and ftrs bomb and strafe Ft Mears and Dutch Harbor in several waves
inflicting little damage and killing 52 US personnel. P-40’s from Cold Bay trying to intercept them
arrive 10 min after the last attack wave departs. Other P-40’s at Umnak are notified too late due to
communication failure. 9 P-40’s and 6 B-26’s fly patrol but cannot find the fleet—180 mi S of Dutch
Harbor—but 2 of the P-40’s engage 4 carrier-based aircraft, shoot down one and damage another.

Various bmr search-attack missions are flown in an attempt to contact the fleet reported near Seguam
I. No contact is made due to weather. 8 P-38’s en route from Cold Bay to Umnak mistakenly attack a
USSR freighter. Japanese begin to land on Kiska.

6 B-24’s and 16 P-38’s join Navy aircraft to fly air cover in several relays during retirement of US light
cruisers and destroyers following bombardment of installations in the Kurabu Cape-Musashi Bay
areas. Shortly afterwards, the aircraft also photograph and attack installations at Paramushiru and Shimushu.

Adv HQ is established on Shemya with Gen Harry A Johnson as Dep Cmdr. 5 B-24’s fly air coverage
for naval units. Another fleet coverage mission by 10 B-25’s is cancelled due to weather. Before clearance
can be obtained from Russians through diplomatic channels, a B-24 air-drops provisions to
marooned crew of B-24 which forcelanded on Kamchatka on 17 Nov 44.

5 B-24’s radar-bomb tgts on Kataoka, Suribachi, and Kakumabetsu with unobserved results. l ftr is
sighted but no attack is made. 2 other B-24’s on this mission abort due to weather and mechanical
trouble. B-25 missions to Hayakegawa and Paramushiru are also canceled due to weather.

5 B-24’s bomb Kurabu A/F area. 8 B-25’s weather-abort a mission to Hayakegawa.

Because of a navigational error, 2 B-24’s on a photo mission to Matsuwa reach 130 mi S of the island,
the deepest penetration of the Japanese Home Islands to date. The B-24’s turn N, photograph
Matsuwa and bomb Shimushiru with unobserved results.

photograph Shasukotan, Harumukotan, and Onnekotan.

5 B-24’s bomb and photograph Kashiwabara naval base. 8 B-25’s bomb canneries along the
Masugawa and Asahigawa Rivers.
3/26/45 Eleventh AF
2 missions, each by 4 B-25’s, attempt to bomb canneries on the Masugawa and the Hayakegawa
rivers. Ftrs drive off Masugawa mission. Other mision cannot find tgt due to weather. 4 B-24’s bomb
Kataoka naval base.

The Eleventh and Fleet Air Wing Four execute the heaviest and most successful joint mission to date.
12 B-24’s bomb shipping tgts at Kataoka naval base, and fly photo rcn over E and W Paramushiru on
return trip. Next, 16 Attu-based B-25’s take off. 1 aborts while the others hit shipping between
Kashiwabara and Kataoka. Heavy AA fire claims 1 B-25. A B-24 and a B-25 forceland in the USSR.

In coordination with Navy surface and air forces attacking in the Kurils, 6 B-24’s and 8 B-25’s fly
extensive armed weather rcn and anti-shipping sweeps over Kurabu and Otomari Capes,
Ichinowatashi, and Asahigawa. The B-24’s score no results, half of them jettisoning their bombs. The
B-25’s then fly a diversionary bombing mission over Araido where they are attacked by 8 ftrs. To
evade them, the B-25’s fly over Kamchatka where Soviet AA fire shoots down one, killing its crew.
Another damaged B-25 crashlands in Petropavlovsk. This is the first time Soviet AA hits a US aircraft.
6/10/45 Eleventh AF
2 B-24’s fly with Navy aircraft on shipping attack and hit a small cargo vessel.
6/11/45 Eleventh AF
8 B-24’s on shipping sweep over the Kurils do not find tgts because of overcast and instead radarbomb
installations on Kurabu Cape and in Kataoka areas.
8/13/45 Eleventh AF
Eleventh AF dispatches its last combat mission when 6 B-24’s radar-bomb Kashiwabara staging area,
leaving huge columns of smoke.
