Yes, I would agree with Mr. Kalinin's assessment. I have found errors of such items in other OSPREY books. Please pass on to Mr. Kalinin that the OSPREY books are primarily written and sold as introductory information books. Here in the U.S.A., any good researcher would use them only as general information and not as a primary source of information. I would also say, that it is probably more easier for most authors to deal with western archives due to the easier accessibility, more common knowledge of the historical background, and ease of translation.
One can only say that Neil's first attempt on a topic from Eastern European countries will improve with more access to your History, and will stimulate other authors to increase their investigative process.
It seems I have created quite a storm with the Osprey book on the Stalin and Molotov Line!
In my defence I should make a number of points. Firstly, ideally I would have sent the book to you to review, but Osprey insist on a delivery date. I have discussed the problem of this approach with Osprey, but they will not change.
Secondly, I accept that any errors that appear in the book are mine and mine alone. They are genuine mistakes and I will endeavour to ensure that they are highlighted. More worrying for me is that the mistakes have damaged your reputation and your relations with other fortification experts in Russia and the Ukraine. If you think it would help for me to contact Vladimir or your colleagues in Ukraine then I will. My sole intention was to produce an excellent book on this incredibly interesting, but often overlooked subject.
Thirdly, as you may be aware Osprey did offer a contract for this book to a writer in Russia, but for whatever reason it was declined. It is therefore unfair for Vladimir to say that the history of the former Soviet Union should only be written by Russians.
I consider Vladimir my friend, but he wants his review to be used without any changes to the review. I do not know what people in Russia think about his review, but the few people I showed a copy of his review believe it is a personal attack on Neil Short more than Neil's work and this makes Vladimir look like a person who wants some type of vengance. I do not want other members of our group to believe Vladimir is a bad person, so I can not publish his review in the newsletter.
