The situation of Kokutan before the battle
By the change of the operation plan of 91th Division, the 2nd Company, which had attached importance to the defense of Kokutan, changed the formation around April and the HQ of Maeda company commander moved to Cape Murakami and 19 garrisons and one field gun were deployed at Kokutan.
The positions were built spending a long time and it was said that they were the best positions in Kurils. They were caves dug in rock and built very firm. Above positions, there were observation posts covering with about 1m-thick soil. The batteries of 1st and 2nd platoons were communicated with tunnel. There was a magazine in the middle of the tunnel and there was an entrance to observation post near to 1st platoon. In the previous deployment, Sokuo Platoon faced to Kotomari and 2nd Platoon faced to Jyogasaki. But, artillery was redeced to one piece by the change of deployment and its duty became to bombard landing enemy for coastal defense.
The daily routine of Sokuo Platoon was the training of firing, the reinforcement work of positions and the spotting of passing ships. In the firing training, they were trained even to hit unvisible target. And it was very practical like the special device to attach fuse in order to improve the firing rate, I believe that it was very helpful to make a great success in the battle later. The reinforcement work was to build a warehouse to store ammunition and foods and a living space. Everybody lower than NCO worked hard every day. Each one swung a large hammer 300 times by turns to make a hole in rock to set explosive.
At Kokutan, there were one platoon from Murakami Battalion (actual strength was two squads commanded by Lt. Katagiri), one mortar squad commanded by Sgt. Sakada, one AT-gun squad commanded by Sgt. Sato and one field gun of Sokuo Platoon. They were commanded by Lt. Katagiri. Besides them, there were watchers despatched from the division (commanded by Lt. Ogawa) and an air information squad commanded by Sgt. Furuki. I think that they were about 80 men in total.
