Original press photo from 1945 featuring PULLING OUT of a highly destructive run, this Mitchell bomber is shown over snow-covered Kashiwabara array staging area, Paramushiru Island, in the Northern Kurilas', after scoring a direct hit on a 2,^00 ton Japanese cargo vessel which can be seen exploding and burning in its anchorage. This Mitchell was part of a task force of Eleventh Air Force Mitchell and Liberators bombers which accounted for a total of six enemy ships sunk or damaged on May U 1945. This was the biggest day's toll of shipping in almost two years. One B-25 was lost.

The Elventh Air Force Mitchell which made this photograph could be said to be flying at tree-top level, but there are no trees in the Kuriles. Note especially the ostrich-like pose of the soldier near the center of the photo. One B25 was lost on the mission, 11 May 1945.
